2000 HOLDEN HYBRIDS STRIP TRIALS

MIR-treated and control crops were planted in seven states: Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Nebraska and Minnesota during the 2000 planting season.

The crops were routinely inspected during the summer. The following are observations that were recorded at various locations. A Stand Count chart is provided at the end of the observation section.

LOCATION: Langdon Bros. Seed, Hartford City, IN
HYBRID: 244x184 & 33x283
2500 ft. strips of 6 rows
Observation: MIR rows tasseled 2-3 days earlier than check rows. In 33x283, MIR rows had slightly better stand. In 244x185 MIR leaves showed better turgor, with more vertical leaves than check (as shown in photo below). MIR sweet corn tasseled 2-3 days earlier and ears were ready for harvest 2-3 days earlier. MIR sweet corn ears were also of significantly better quality with substantial yield gains.

LOCATION: Becks' Hybrids, Atlanta IN
HYBRID: 200x185 & 33x283
Observation: According to Dr. Kevin Cavanaugh, Director of Research, there was more uniformity in the 200x185 MIR plot and better turgor in the leaves. In the 33x283 plot, the leaves stood straighter and more vertical.

LOCATION: Cornbelt Hybrid, Greenville, OH
HYBRID: 33x283
Observation:The MIR plants showed 12+ inches of extra height over the waist-high control plants. The grower indicated that both plots were stressed by excess rain and would generally be taller, indicating improved stress tolerance by the MIR plants.

LOCATION: Steyer's, Blissfield, MI
HYBRID: 197x185, 33x283, 200x185, 284x185
Observation: MIR stand counts were higher in strips of all four hybrids.

197x85   MIR had +2.9% better stand (95% statistical sig.)
33x285   MIR had +4.3% better stand (90% statistical sig.)
200x185 MIR had +6.2% better stand (not significant)
244x185 MIR had +8.4% better stand (95% statistical sig.)

LOCATION: Dahlco Seed, Cokato, MN
HYBRID: 198x172
Observation: In general, there was no significant stand difference, but the MIR plants were greener with a +11% increase in ear length (95% statistical significance). The angle of the sun to the camera was the same in both photos.
